A Day Without Photographs

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Alas, there was nothing cool to photograph today.  Today was a day for travel, but not too much of it.  We drove into Nova Scotia today, and tomorrow we’ll be off to catch the ferry to Newfoundland.

George

George the Groundhog

Okay, so I’m definitely dedicating today’s post to my new friend George, the groundhog.  Yesterday I mentioned running into a groundhog by a bridge, and today we went back to see if he was still there.  He was definitely still hanging around the same place, so I’m guessing he probably lives in the concrete dividers nearby.  We fed him some wheat-thins, and he got just wonderfully close to us.  Didn’t get to pet him, but got pretty close.  George is a pretty cool critter, altogether.  He’s even nearly vegan (apparently they occasionally eat “some insects”).  Well, he does wear fur, but I guess I can let him slide on that one.

Waterfall

A waterfall near Saint John, New Brunswick

Badum psh!  Now that I’ve set the bar even lower for corny post titles, on to the day’s events.  Today we drove from Maine into Canada, and not too far over the border we went to a tourist information center…and met quite possibly the most Canadian sounding man I’ve ever met.  Admittedly, he didn’t go as far as “aboot” (I have yet to hear that in real life), but there was definitely an “aboat” in there, which is about as Canadian as it gets.

Through The Fog

Ghost

A ghastly looking version of myself in Maine

In Bradenton, we get fog from time to time.  I’ll wake up in the morning to find slightly reduced visibility, and then by mid-afternoon things will clear up again.  Tonight, however, I find myself in Maine, and they have an entirely different definition of fog.  When we arrived in Rockland, Maine today, the ground was dry.  Three hours later, I couldn’t even see all the way up to the next sharp curve in the hilly road, let alone around it.

New York!

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

We’ve been driving on the way up to Nova Scotia, and last night we pulled in to stay in New York City, a couple of blocks away from Times Square.  I’ve always suspected it, but now I can say with certainty that I couldn’t handle living in a big city.  Just being a passenger in a vehicle nearly gave me a heart attack on the way in.  Everyone drives crazy, and there are pedestrians everywhere. And this was at ten ‘o clock at night.

To Canadia Again

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The Canadia Blog started with a trip to Canada (hence the name) last year, and now it’s time for another.  Once again, the Canadia blog gets to live up to its name.  I left today with my grandparents, and this time I’m driving up to Newfoundland.  We drove up to South Carolina today, with New York coming tomorrow.  Unfortunately, there’s not much to talk about now, other than a long day full of driving.  On the bright side, I found a DC inverter to run my laptop off the vehicle’s power, so I was able to get an awful lot of work done on my new project, FlexGallery.

Bird in a Tree

I found this little guy sitting on a tree on the way out

I got to make another trip to Robinson Preserve a couple of days ago, this time with a friend specifically to go photographing.  I only shot with my 70-200 f/4 this time, and it turned out surprisingly well, for the short focal length.  Hopefully next time, though, I’ll have access to a 400 f/5.6 again, which will give me an awfully better view of the wildlife.  In the meantime, I made do well enough at 200mm, just had to be a little bit sneaky with the assorted creatures (birds, mostly).  And, of course, there was a little bit of cropping involved in post processing, but I guess that’s just the way it goes sometimes. Izzie With Lizard-Tongue

Isabella sticking her tongue out

Went out to a photographers’ meetup yesterday, and roamed the streets of downtown Sarasota with a bunch of fellow photographers. This made for some mighty interesting photographs, like this portrait in front of a busy sidewalk. It was a fun time all around, got to meet a bunch of other people and just generally have a good time. Afterwards I got to go pick up Danielle, and go meet our friends Ryan and Jessica, with my camera gear still in the car.

Big Top

The circus and an inflatable slide over rows of corn at the Pumpkin Festival

So I went with my girlfriend to Hunsader Farms’ Pumpkin Festival over a month ago, and I just now got around to sortingout the photographs, so figured I’d make a blog post about it now.  Not too much to it, I suppose.  Went to the Pumpkin Festival, walked around, looked at crafts and such, had a great time.  Of particular interest was a massive pneumatic pumpkin cannon, which hurled pumpkins a thousand-some feet off into the forest (I can only hope no unfortunate persons or woodland creatures became its target).

Animals, and Lots of Them

Om Nom Nom

A kangaroo, happily munching away at some fruits and leafy greens

I was back in Bradenton for the weekend today, and ended up going out to Majical Miniatures animal sanctuary with my dad, sister, and girlfriend.  My dad’s been running a pet shop lately, and some way or other ended up meeting the woman who runs it, who offered to take in our prairie dog, who’s getting rather old, and hasn’t been handling pet-shop life particularly well (she was sort of a display animal, just there to hang out and play with the customers).  So Annie the prairie dog went away to their shelter, and today we went out to see her, and the rest of the animals.  The interesting thing is, the shelter is next door to the house and land where my family used to live out in Parish: driving back onto the property, we actually saw the old chicken coop that we built oh-so-many years ago.  Dad had told us that they had kangaroos and wallabies, and sure enough, just as soon as we walked through the door there was a kangaroo eating his lunch (or was it supper?)  I just had to bring the camera along, and got some nifty shots, albeit with only a single on-camera strobe to work with.
